Sandwich, Kent

SANDWICH, A HISTORIC TOWN ON THE EAST COAST OF KENT, UK

Sandwich lies on the River Stour, close to the sea. The Roman invasion of Britain began here in AD 43. It is one of the Cinque Ports and retains much of its medieval heritage. Contrary to popular belief that England has never suffered invasion since 1066, Sandwich was attacked and captured by 4000 Frenchmen in 1457. Today, Sandwich is best known for its golf courses and nature reserves.
