Margate, Kent

MARGATE, A SEASIDE TOWN ON THE ISLE OF THANET, KENT

Margate is a seaside town, 15 miles from Canterbury. Known for its extensive sandy beaches, Dreamland amusement park and a high-speed rail link to London, it is popular with holiday makers. Its prestige has risen since the opening of the Turner Contemporary art gallery in 2011. Historically, Margate has been a 'limb' of Dover in the confederation of Cinque Ports and in 1387 gave its name to the influential but little remembered naval Battle of Margate.
