Broadstairs, Kent

BROADSTAIRS, THE 'JEWEL IN THE CROWN' OF THE THANET COASTLINE, EAST KENT

Named after a former flight of steps in the chalk cliff leading up to the 11th-century shrine of St Mary, Broadstairs is a popular seaside holiday resort 80 miles east of London. A fishing community with a small harbour dating back to the 14th-century, Broadstairs was a favourite with Princess Victoria and today is even more accessible on the High Speed rail service from London. The novelist Charles Dickens lived and wrote novels here and the town still retains a Victorian charm. Annual events include a Dickens Festival and Broadstairs Folk Week.
