Simon Weatherley & Hedley Basford

Simon has been a photographer for over 30 years. He has a keen eye for the subject, the location and the shot. He missed his best ever shot when he dropped his camera whilst swimming with Leopard and Bonnet nosed sharks in Florida. His swimming has not stopped and he swims daily 12 months of the year with the Kingsdown Dream Team open water swimmers!

Hedley has been taking photographs since the age of nine. When 12 years old he narrowly avoided setting fire to the house when he made an impromptu flash gun using a cake baking tin into which he placed a strip of magnesium ribbon that, in those days, a child could buy from the local chemist for a few pence! A wooden spoon made the handle. The result produced a brilliant white light that lasted rather longer than anticipated...!

Hedley holds the Licentiate distinction awarded by The Royal Photographic Society of Great Britain - LRPS. He is also a bellringer at Canterbury Cathedral.

What makes our images different

Images are produced by taking multiple photographs at different exposures, merging them together and then applying layers of varying types of adjustment to achieve the finished result.

The photographs are taken in what is known as RAW format. The RAW format gives photography a legitimacy as an art form - unlike the familiar JPG format which pre-processes the image, RAW produces a digital file containing all the individual pixels without any processing. A RAW file, which is many times larger than a JPG file, typically 25MB in size, provides a ‘palette’ of light, equivalent to the oils on an artist's palette. The mouse becomes the brush and the screen becomes the canvas.

The images are printed on Fotospeed Smooth Pearl 290g natural white base paper. They are printed using genuine Canon inks on a Canon PRO-10S printer that uses 10 ink cartridges, one of which is Chroma Optimizer. This is a clear ink from the professional LUCIA ink range that delivers uniform glossiness, expands colour gamut and makes the black colours deeper.
